THE HUNGER

When it’s over,
what remains is the hunger:
a strange nostalgia,
not for what was but
for what I was going to have…
someday.

What to do
when even the price of
happily-ever-after is
tears, black bands of grief, and
the grave?

End love before it ends?

Capture it like a photograph:

Confine it in frames
of fantasy and memory;
loss redeemed in protective coverings
stronger than wood and glass

Place it before me,
never accessible but
always there

perfect

unchanging

forever?

  1. I have felt this hunger... at the price of happily-ever-after. For all its sadness, this is a beautiful and well-expressed poem.

  3. love your phrasing in this! the whole poem reads like a sigh - which perfectly complements the piece I think - those first few lines said it all "what remains is the hunger:
    a strange nostalgia,
    not for what was but
for what I was going to have…
someday." - great to see it up on dVerse! OT

  5. Ah, if only it were so simple...to set it apart, yet capture it eternally, as a photo. Yet the heart yearns, it churns, despite the pain of love's end - it strives for more, and pulls us back to it, time and again. The hunger...oh, the heart is possessed of a great deal of that.

  7. Thank you all so much for the comments. I have been sitting on this poem since October. I was hesitant to post it. I was not sure that it communicated the sentiment that I was going for. You let me know that I am moving in the right direction.

  8. This poem really spoke to me and reminded me of something I did last month. I had found an usual photograph frame in the same style as a coffee table that my ex-husband and I purchased on our honeymoon in Lake Placid 35 years ago. I took my favourite picture of him - it was just before we were married, and put it in the frame and on my desk. I thought the children might say something at Christmas, but they seemed to think it perfectly natural, which it is. Great poem!

  9. Hmm some part of my soul is weeping in unison with my heart. It's seem to me once love goes bad no matter how long it lasted. It was all bad as time passes.
